Meteorite (The air as sculptor), 2012
[provisional title]
90 x 35 x 20 cm
Onyx
For Meteorite (The air as sculptor), the N'goureyma meteorite, housed at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, is digitally scanned and sculpted on a 1:1 scale into a block of white onyx.
In this work the air emerges as both sculptor and alchemist: its elastic limit carved the meteorite’s form, while its absence, over eons, compressed the stone’s strata. This fusion transforms the work into a tactile mythos where the celestial and terrestrial converge. The sculpture’s intangible nature etches permanence, and refers to humanity’s grasp for the sublime.
Meteorite would find its setting within an existing meteorite crater, or displayed and documented as a mythological/religious natural reliquary.
*3D scan was produced with thanks to the generous support of Giacometti Foundation, Paris and MNHN Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris
