Meteorite, 2012
90 x 35 x 20 cm
marble / onyx
For Meteorite [provisional title], the N'goureyma meteorite, housed at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, is digitally scanned and sculpted on a 1:1 scale into a block of white onyx.
In this work the air emerges as both sculptor and alchemist: its elastic limit carved the meteorite’s form, while its absence, over eons, compressed the stone’s strata. This fusion transforms the work into a tactile mythos where the celestial and terrestrial converge. The sculpture’s intangible nature etches permanence, and refers to humanity’s grasp for the sublime.
Ideally, Meteorite would find its setting and image documentation within an existing meteorite crater or displayed as a mythological or religious natural reliquary.
